A Practical Introduction to Wildlife Care

Shelanti’s Veterinary Wildlife Course offers an engaging and practical introduction to caring for animals in a reserve environment. Set in the malaria-free Bushveld, the programme provides insight into wildlife behaviour, habitat needs, ethical management practices and the complex balance required to maintain healthy animal populations.

Participants learn through guided sessions, field activities and real exposure to the daily operations of a functioning game reserve. The course is for vet and pre-vet students or wildlife and biology students.

Our Vetenarian

Dr. Thunis Loggenberg (NDip Clinical Clinical Engineering and BVSc Veterinary Science) was born in the Free State province of South Africa and grew up on a cattle farm where his passion for animals began. After matriculating he studied Clinical Biomedical Engineering. After completion of his studies, he worked at Abbott Laboratories for 3 years where he gained extensive knowledge in Haematology, Serology and Blood Chemistry Analysis in the human field.

He then followed his passion and studied Veterinary Sciences at Onderstepoort at the University of Pretoria where he completed his degree. After his studies he immediately started his own private practice.

Dr. Thinus Loggenberg has a great passion for wildlife, production animals and conservation. He works extensively with game capture teams, immobilizing and translocating wildlife between reserves for management purposes. His favourite animals to work with is Rhino, African Buffalo and Giraffe and each day working with him presents its own new challenges and excitement. In wildlife medicine one never know what to expect and his calm and relaxed nature helps everybody to stay calm even when things don’t go as planned. He is a patient teacher and always tries to teach students by giving them hands on experience.

Dr. Thinus is extensively involved with Shelanti Game Reserve by assisting in movement of wildlife, disease control and surveillance. Individual animals are also treated when needed and animals are immobilized for capture and translocation.

Working alongside the team will be a once in a lifetime experience and guarantee a great theoretical and hands-on experience.
